HOOSIER CHESS ACADEMY IS HIRING AFTER-SCHOOL CHESS INSTRUCTORS!
And guess what? All you need is a basic understanding of the game and a passion for working with children!
Pay rate: $60 per chess club/program session taught (potential for pay raises each semester)
Hours: FLEXIBLE! We work with many different schools on many different days of the week. However many sessions you’re up for, that’s how many you’ll teach. When you are contacted about the position, we will give specific details about specific dates and times. For now, expect to teach anywhere between a wide window of 3:30 and 6:30pm on weekdays.
Starting date/ending date: As early as Tuesday, April 8, 2025, and ending Friday, December 19, 2025, with potential for extension.
What makes a candidate stand out:
You are an experienced chess player
You have experience working with children in youth development or school settings
You can arrive at a session a bit early to set up and prepare and stay a bit later to tidy up
You positively promote the game of chess to kids and the community
Basic qualifications are that:
You are 18 years of age or older
You can successfully pass a background check
You know the movement of the chess pieces, check, and checkmate
You can commit to further learning how to teach chess effectively and improving your chess-playing skills
You are reliable, responsible, dedicated, engaging, and inclusive
You can meet with us for onboarding prior to beginning teaching duties
You can reliably transport chess sets to and from session sites when they cannot be stored securely at a site
What you’ll be doing: Students will typically be elementary-aged, anywhere from kindergarten to sixth grade. The maximum number of students in each session is typically 30 (with other adults present—not just you). Students come in, play chess with each other, watch instructional videos, receive direct chess instruction from you and other adults, and partake in engaging whole-group activities. Materials, rosters, and student information will be provided to you. You’ll teach chess, play a bit with the kids, and ensure student safety.
How to apply: Send your resume/CV, cover letter, and at least two references to Ben Foley at btownscholasticchess@gmail.com. You can also email with any questions you may have about the chess instructor position. Don’t be shy! We’d love to consider you.
